Skype 5.0 beta fulfills one of the long-awaited and most-requested features, namely Video Conferencing. This beta version allows you to make group video calls. However, this facility may not work under Virtual Machines.

Due to the new Video conferencing functionality, Skype underwent a deep change on its calling interface. Unlike earlier versions, this time you will see a separate window launching whenever you perform a call. It is designed to hide all information other than those functions required for calling, though some few tools can be still accessible during the call.

Even though it comes with a limited amount of new features, Skype keeps all the existing goodies within. The “Call forwarding” option still helps you stay in contact at all times by forwarding any incoming a call to another number of your choice. Skype also allows you to make calls to any phone using Skype Credit. Its “Instant messaging” feature helps you to keep in touch with friends and family by typing and sending your messages. Besides, while on the chat or during a phone call, the “screen sharing” option lets you show a section or the whole of your screen to the person you are calling. Together with this, file sharing is another of its great assets. However, you need to be careful receiving a file from unknown contacts, as this tool can also be used as a way to distribute malware or spyware.

Note that this beta version is not supported by Windows 2000.
